Drug Testing on Teens
U.S. Information and World Report (see resource links) published an article August 6 called 7 Reasons Parents Should Not Test Kids for Drug Use.
The article makes some proper points. My personal experience is both negative and positive, just like the results we received. The down side is that our son's results were often nullifying even though he was using drugs. That was generally because he wasn't actually using his own urine. On the other worker, after we knew for sure our son was using, home drug testing for a broad spectrum of drugs, witnessed carefully, at the least gave us message. Even if the results weren't 100 percent correct, we could sometimes haul someone over the coals, just by his reaction to being asked to take a drug test and his defensiveness afterwards, whether he was using or not.
It's not something that should supplant a professional assessment or drug counseling, but home drug testing can be a tool in the toolbox. It doesn't have to be adversarial. It can be as uninvolved as being part of a contract that goes with using the car or being allowed more independence. I heard a drug counselor talk recently who advocated the assertion of "We don't doubt your word that you aren't using, we just in need of you to back it up with action."
As I have written previously, however, institutional drug testing is a crap open fire. We often paid for witnessed drug screens at a laboratory only to find out that they weren't witnessed or weren't witnessed closely enough.
